Kingsman: The Golden Circle Movie Review 2017
If you’re looking to have some fun with a movie, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is just the ticket. The sequel to the original Kingsman film, it is light, stylish, and silly.
The original Kingsman film, Kingsman: The Secret Service, came out in 2014. It had some depth, an interesting story, and a great cast. Action-packed and quirky, it was a fun watch. There is a second and third film that I’d never gotten around to watching, so I thought it was time to get a jump on those.
The Kingsman series focuses on a secret spy group who spend time thwarting bad-guys’ plans that could impact the world. They are essentially superheroes crossed with Inspector Gadgets in very sharp suits with classy martinis and all kinds of contraptions and code names.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle generally takes place where the first movie has left off. Eggsy (played by Taron Egerton) has adopted the code name of Galahad due to Harry’s passing in the first film (played by Colin Firth) and is leading his chapter of agents. When a strange blue veiny-looking affliction begins to spread throughout the world (obvious because people look like their veins are blue), the agents must figure out what is happening and stop it before millions of people die.
If I’m being honest, I did not totally understand the intricacies of the bad-guy plot. There is a lot – some of which is strange and unclear – but I got the basics, and I didn’t even care. This action comedy is bright and funny with tons of color and charm. The characters range from hugely bizarre to average, and the agents’ confidence and artillery make each fight sequence completely unique.
The music in this movie is absolutely fantastic right from the start. Within the first minute you hear Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” and later you get music from Elton John, John Denver, Cameo, and more. You’ll find yourself jamming out while watching these extremely choreographed scenes, hoping that your favorite characters will end up alive.
Speaking of the cast, it is magnificent. For the first hour of the film, you are meeting new characters and new actors (including the pictured Channing Tatum and Julianne Moore) that you know and enjoy. They are aware that it is all silly and that is the whole point. They are in on it and playing every moment for their character. Don’t go into The Golden Circle thinking that it’s going to be like Mission Impossible because you will miss all the fun.
My favorite little bonus was finding out that Taron Egerton got the role of Elton John in Rocketman (in part) because of this movie. Have you seen that film? It’s such a great watch.
I do recommend that you watch the first Kingsman film before this one for context, but they do a pretty good job of catching you up in this film if you haven’t seen it. Totally up to you, of course, but do give these movies a chance – they’re a really good time.
