Another Simple Favor Movie Review (2025)
A stylish and funny sequel to A Simple Favor, Another Simple Favor is full of vivid colors, beautiful locales, and some extremely funny moments.
When A Simple Favor came out in 2018, I heard a few rumblings about it. It took me a few years to watch, but it is a clever mystery starring Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, and Henry Golding. With soap opera tones and jealous housewife vs. wild child vibes, it is super entertaining. Luckily, so is the sequel.
Another Simple Favor picks up about 5 years after the end of A Simple Favor, with Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) an online sleuth and author, and Emily (Blake Lively) returning to the scene after being away. Frenemies to the core, Emily arrives at Stephanie’s book reading (a book written about Emily) and invites her to Italy to celebrate Emily’s upcoming nuptials. Nothing goes smoothly in this world, so the wedding, of course, is ultimately fraught with chaos and tragedy.
This is a really fun film. It’s extremely sassy and tongue-in-cheek, always in on its own joke. There is a sharp wit about the dialogue – and a lot of it catches you off-guard, giving my favorite laugh out loud moments.
Andrew Rannells plays a small role as Stephanie’s friend and gay dad, Darren, and his lines are hysterical. My favorite being (to his young daughter), “Remember, if you can’t be smart, be funny. And if you can’t be funny, be pretty,” but he has a few winners and delivers them pricelessly.
As with any “soap opera-ey” plot, things run to places that real-life couldn’t, but that is the fun of movies like this. They delve into the silly with a film noir feel, but with manicured sights and clever wit.
The visuals and cinematography are gorgeous, with beautiful bright colors and landscapes, and costumes that are both stylish and glaringly funny. In one scene, there is a very obviously American Stephanie in Italy, wearing a printed T-shirt, jeans, and her bag slung across her body. In contrast, all of the Italian natives and other tourists are dressed beautifully, in what we would consider business casual clothing or better. Americans do stick out like sore thumbs in other countries!
There is also a fantastic scene where Anna Kendrick is actively sad and crying, but in the next second becomes chatty and irritated with tears streaming down her face. It’s all very funny and smart.
This movie is a really good time. It is the sequel to A Simple Favor (available on Netflix) and while you don’t have to watch the first one to enjoy this movie, it will benefit you if you do. There are a lot of crossover jokes and history that you will miss otherwise. Enjoy!
