A visually striking but painfully muddled take on the classic fairy tale, Red Riding Hood combines a werewolf mystery, gothic romance, and Twilight-style love triangle without finding a convincing way to make any of them work. Every once in a while I happen upon a movie that probably won’t be good, but I have to…
A fantastic comedy about a group of gifted college students whose scientific breakthrough is secretly being turned into a weapon, Real Genius stands apart from other comedies of its time, replacing crude 80s humor with sharp wit, genuine intelligence, and a story that still feels surprisingly relevant today. When I was a kid, Real Genius…
A science-fiction drama about ordinary people trying to make sense of encounters with unexplained phenomena, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind is a beautifully paced film that uses extraordinary performances and a breathtaking finale to tell a story that’s ultimately more about obsession than aliens. When Disclosure Day was released in theaters a few months…
A science-fiction spy thriller about an operative attempting to stop a global disaster by unraveling the mysteries of time inversion, Tenet is packed with inventive ideas and impressive visual effects, but spends so much time showing off the brilliance of its concept that its emotional investment takes a back seat. After watching The Odyssey last…
A time-travel comedy about an ordinary man trying to prevent a disastrous future, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is funny, unpredictable, and refreshingly creative, revealing its story through cleverly interwoven past and present timelines. One of the most entertaining thematic choices for a movie is time travel. No one knows exactly what it should…
A mystery drama about a popular high school student forced to relive the day of her death over and over again, Before I Fall is an atmospheric film with an intriguing premise and a protagonist whose growth becomes increasingly rewarding to watch. The first time I watched the movie Groundhog Day was in the movie…
A psychological thriller about a woman who loses her memories every time she falls asleep and must piece together the truth about her life each day, Before I Go to Sleep is an intriguing and suspenseful film that uses its unusual premise to keep you guessing until the end. When I watched the movie 50…
A superhero adventure about Supergirl helping a young alien hunt down the man responsible for her family’s murder, Supergirl is a perfectly enjoyable watch, offering creative science-fiction ideas and some exciting action, even if its cookie-cutter story and thin character development keep it from becoming something memorable. When the Superman movie started being discussed in…
A heartfelt medieval fantasy about a disillusioned knight who forms an unlikely bond with the last remaining dragon, Dragonheart is an old-fashioned adventure elevated by its fairy-tale sincerity and uplifting score, even if it is a little uneven. I am a huge fan of the movie Labyrinth. I love it dearly, and it will always…
A disaster film about a climatologist trying to reach his son as catastrophic weather events reshape the world, The Day After Tomorrow is an uneven film with strong performances, memorable visuals, and an emotional core that helps ground its stranger moments. I have never been particularly drawn to disaster movies. I’ve watched and enjoyed many…
A fantasy adventure about the battle for Eternia spilling into modern-day Earth, Masters of the Universe is a campy and surprisingly enjoyable film that embraces the spirit of the original cartoon while having fun with its fish-out-of-water premise. If you were an 80s kid like me, you grew up playing with Barbies and He-Man figures….
A fantasy adventure about a young girl afraid of the real monsters under her bed, Dust Bunny is a beautifully designed film, with charming performances and an imaginative, storybook-like feel. Mads Mikkelsen has slowly added himself to my list of favorite actors. I first noticed him years ago, but it was when I watched Arctic…
