Top 10 Of 100 Film List #1 (2024)

These are the top 10 from the first 100 “new to me” films that I watched in 2024. There are lots of excellent movies out there, but these were my favorites from this batch.

*Note – I never watch horror movies, so if you watch any of these, you can be sure that they aren’t that genre.

In no particular order:

1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) – A masterpiece of a film about a town of imperfect people trying to live their lives after the murder of a teenager. Watch it. (Currently free on Hulu or available to rent on Prime)

2. Perfect Days (2023) – A Japanese film about a man seeking to live a life of simplicity and tranquility. A beautiful thinker of a movie. (Currently free on Hulu or available to rent on Prime)

3. Judy Blume Forever (2023) – An amazing documentary that was produced for me and everyone else around my age whose inner child still connects with and remembers the effects of Judy Blume books. I laughed, I cried, I love her. (Currently free on Prime)

4. Dinner in America (2020) – A wild and dark comedy that will keep you on a ride as it slowly worms its way into your heart. I will watch this one a few more times, my cheeks hurt so much. (Currently free on Hulu or available to rent on Prime)

5. The Florida Project (2017) – A documentary-like film about a struggling mom and her 6 year-old daughter who are staying in a long-term hotel. I don’t want to say too much, just watch it through to the very last minute. It has Willem Dafoe. It’s incredible. (Currently free on Max or available to rent on Prime)

6. Grandma (2015) – Lily Tomlin stars as a cranky poet lesbian grandma who takes her granddaughter on a road trip to gather money to end an unwanted pregnancy. Lots of random celebrity actors and lots of laughs in a complex situation. (Currently free on Tubi or available to rent on Prime)

7. The Last Repair Shop (2023) – A short documentary (2024 Oscar Short winner) about a shop that repairs musical instruments through a school program for students. This focuses on the people who make the repairs, the students who love their instruments, and the gift of music. (Currently free on Youtube and Disney Plus)

8. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) – The sequel to the original Blade Runner movie, the story, the pacing, the colors, the cinematography, the acting – it’s all a huge win. You don’t really have to have seen the original film, you will catch up quickly. Plus, Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford (Currently available to rent on Prime)

9. V for Vendetta (2005) – Phantom of the Opera meets Kill Bill. A vigilante meets a young girl and together they work to defeat the oppressors. The concept, the performances, and some surprising moments made this really special. (Currently available to rent on Prime)

10. Parasite (2019) – A very dark comedy about a Korean family of con artists who infiltrate a rich family. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020. It’s fantastic. It has subtitles, don’t let that stop you. (Currently free on Hulu and Netflix or available to rent on Prime)
