KPop Demon Hunters Movie Review (2025)
A great new film with one banger song after the next, KPop Demon Hunters is the animated movie that you never knew you needed in your life. It is so much fun, believe me, you need it.
It is remarkable what studios can do with animation these days. I remember waking up on Saturday mornings to watch The Smurfs, Muppet Babies, and The Flintstones and we didn’t really care what they looked like. It wasn’t a “thing” as long as you could differentiate one character from another. There was some artistry involved, of course, but what they can do now is just incredible.
KPop Demon Hunters is a story about a popular K-pop trio – Rumi, Mira, and Zoey – who balance the love and peace in the world with the power of their voices. Each generation has a trio like this, and while their music can affect the open world, they double as demon hunters to keep all of the bad guys away. With the power of their peace almost at its peak, the demon master colludes with Jinu, another demon, to take over the world’s energy once and for all.
This animated comedy grabbed me within the first 60 seconds and continued to get better and better. As the narration begins at the opening of the film, they describe how generations of trios have kept the world in check. When this happens, visually, they show you different trios in clothing from different generations. Immediately, it was clear that there was some real thought that went into this production.
Then, a few more minutes in, the music begins. There are about a dozen songs in this film and they are so good. You will not be able to stop yourself from bopping to them, and just when one ends, within minutes, another one begins. Just for the record, they are on Spotify. I know because I have been playing them…
The animation is fun and electric, with crisp lines and bright colors. The characters are full of details and you can see expressions clearly through varying techniques. Also, the demons are cartoonish and silly, there is nothing scary about them. A child could absolutely watch this film.
There are a few excellent messages, the largest of which is to learn to love yourself for exactly who you are. You can grow, make friends, develop a support system, and learn, but pretending to be someone that you aren’t will not serve anyone. “We can’t fix it if we never face it” is one of my favorite quotes from the film.
With exciting visuals, a story that keeps you entertained and one excellent jam after the next, this is a movie for the entire family. But just like Moana, KPop Demon Hunters is a movie that you can also watch for your own enjoyment. It’s really great!
