Now You See Me: Now You Don’t Movie Review (2025)

A heavily uneven heist adventure about a scattered team of illusionists who find their way back together, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t has a great cast and is entertaining enough.

Now You See Me: Now You Don't Movie Review and Poster 2025Magic is always an interesting topic, and watching it up close or as a show is incredibly cool. I remember getting a kick out of the first Now You See Me film because it was about a group of illusions (called The Four Horsemen) who could make the seemingly impossible happen. It was fun. I never got around to seeing the second film (which I’ll have to do now), but now that the third iteration is out, I had to give it a shot.

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is about three young illusionists who use the images of The Four Horsemen to stage a show, steal from a cocky rich guy, and give to the rest of the crowd. Later, recruited by someone named The Eye, the real Four Horsemen and the three newbies take on a diamond heiress, who is displaying her huge heart diamond, but is really part of a money laundering operation.

*Note – you do not have to have seen the first two films to enjoy this one. They recap everything you need to know, and it’s not much.

The cast of this series is fantastic, but this time with a few additions. With Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, and Morgan Freeman in addition to newbies Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, and Ariana Greenblatt, plus Rosamund Pike as the heiress, you’ve got a great group. I’m sure they had a blast on set.

Strangely, some performances were weak and oddly inconsistent. Eisenberg, Harrelson, Freeman, and Pike all appear committed to the moment, but everyone else had scenes where it felt like they were coming off of a break back to work. As if they should have done another take or two, but instead, the director let it ride.

The story is a little convoluted and you don’t entirely understand what is happening sometimes, but because this movie is about illusion, it doesn’t really matter. This is not a serious film, so I always assumed we’d get there eventually (wherever we were going). That said, it could have been tighter.

There are two best parts of the film. After pulling some sleight-of-hand and posing in disguises, the three newbies have a slow motion 10 seconds of costume changes before your eyes. Pulling off velcroed clothing to reveal other things and rearranging hats and hair – I love to see quick-changes on stage and it was fantastic to see it in this film.

The other best part is at an estate owned by The Eye, which is like an escape room house. Everything shifts or moves and there is puzzle after puzzle to solve to reach each destination. It has relics from vaudeville magicians and exhibits of old tricks, rooms reminiscent of an Escher painting and another that rotates – it is just a great location to explore. I wish more of the film had been spent there.

The story itself is silly, but also, somehow, fairly well-paced. You never get bored, but you do find yourself questioning what you are watching or how committed some acting moments are. Some of the magic looks really good, and other magic is so clearly CGI that you are aware of it, which is distracting. But overall, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is a light film that is enjoyable enough. I don’t expect to watch it again, but I wouldn’t complain if you asked me to. It’s just one of those films.
