I Don’t Understand You Movie Review (2025)
A black comedy about a couple on vacation before adopting a baby, I Don’t Understand You brings the laughs as well as the carnage.
Black comedy movies can be hilarious. I am not a fan of straight-up horror with the creepy music and the jump scares, but a guy pulling the arm off of a body and waving it around with blood flying everywhere – very funny. I get a kick out of it if you frame it as silly, just don’t freak me out.
I Don’t Understand You is about Dom and Cole, a couple who have been trying to adopt a child for a few years. They’ve had one devastating experience with adoption in the past, so before hopefully becoming dads this time, they book a trip to Italy to spend a little time together before the new baby arrives. While there, they get lost trying to find an elite restaurant, and end up in a series of mishaps where people keep getting killed.
I laughed out loud at least 6 or 7 times at this black comedy. It is funny, bloody, and very silly – not horror. People die somewhat regularly in the second half of the film, but that is where many of the laughs are. It’s not scary, but there is a lot of blood. If that bothers you, this is not your movie.
Andrew Rannells and Nick Kroll play off of each other beautifully as the couple and there are little bits of Amanda Seyfried (very sweet) as the pregnant mother.
This film does a very good job of showing the differences between someone who lives in the middle of nowhere with 15 labels in their kitchen, dozens of old framed photos on the walls, and doesn’t speak a word of English with two more modern men who depend on their phones, cars, and credit cards to get by. It is funny in and of itself how lost one can be without all of the modern conveniences they’re used to.
There is a point at which you see a newborn baby (and I’m totally nitpicking), but I do wish they’d cast a slightly younger baby. This baby was old enough that it smiled on camera. (I know it’s tough to film a newborn, but suspension of disbelief can only go so far. Even in a comedy where everyone gets killed and no one sees or hears anything. Okay, fine.)
My one actually large criticism is with the post-credits scene. I could have done without it. It changed the story a bit and, although it would have left one large hanging curiosity unanswered, I did not enjoy the answer that they chose to go with. It didn’t make sense.
That said, this is a cute movie with lots of fun banter and a range of funny moments. To my own surprise, I got teary during one scene and ended up mopping my eyes with a tissue. Totally unexpected, but worth watching!
