A solid 1980s crime drama, Street Smart, about a reporter who falls in with a pimp and his prostitutes, levels up heavily because of its cast. I had never heard of this film until a few months ago. I saw that someone else had watched it on Letterboxd and thought, a film with Christopher Reeve…
Based on the fascinating case of twin girls who devolved into a cycle of obsessive silence and loyalty to each other, The Silent Twins tells an excellent story, but doesn’t always keep your interest. Long before I was theatre critic and movie reviewer, I worked in the mental health world. I was a case manager…
A rough thriller about a kidnapped and drugged woman that has no palpable tension, Don’t Move wastes the potential that it had. Remember last week when I was saying that Netflix pumps out movies? Some are better than others and you can never be quite sure until you get into them how it’s going to…
An intense thriller about candidates who walk until there is only one winner, The Long Walk is a story of deep-rooted desires, nefarious ideas, and lifelong brotherhood. I really enjoyed this. I have to admit, I have only ever read part of one Stephen King book. I got about 200 pages into The Stand and…
A wonky film that feels like a combination of Men In Black and Everything Everywhere All At Once, John Dies At The End is an interdimensional dark comedy that has two college dropouts fighting to save the world. I have mentioned many times now that I’m not into horror films, but occasionally I’ll try a…
An riveting sci-fi thriller about astronauts trying to save the sun before the extinction of humanity, Sunshine has an incredible ensemble and a tension that never lets go. There are some excellent films out there with wonderful ensembles. The Big Chill and Steel Magnolias are the first two that pop into my head because no…
An interesting film about an octogenarian who transports drugs for the cartel, The Mule has a great cast and an extra bump from knowing it’s based on a true story. When you think about people in their 80s, the first thing that comes to mind is not “drug mule.” In passing thoughts, pickleball, mahjong, and…
John Wick in Korean, but 4 years before John Wick ever came out? I am SO here for The Man From Nowhere and it is FANTASTIC! I’ll admit that, as usual, I went into this movie completely blind. I had added it to my list long ago and clicked play without reading anything further. Honestly,…
A fun little murder mystery film with personality, The Thursday Murder Club is packed with amazing actors and a whimsical tone. Netflix films can be a little bit hit or miss these days. It feels as if they are sometimes more interested in pumping out products, regardless of quality, just to have something new on…
With a focus on audio just as much as visual, Blow Out is a spectacular film about a sound engineer who accidentally witnesses and records a murder. A work way ahead of its time. I have to admit that when I see that John Travolta is in a film, a little voice inside me says,…
A beautiful film set in a jail cell where a political prisoner listens to tales told by his flamboyant roommate, Kiss Of The Spider Woman is a big story in a small world. I remember watching Kiss Of The Spider Woman on tape as a teenager at my mom’s house. The new musical (of the…
A visually stunning film about a convict preacher who is hunting for a stash of money left to a robber’s young son, The Night Of The Hunter uses cinematic techniques that make it feel unique for its time. There aren’t a lot of films that I don’t feel fully equipped to rate. I have lots…
