The Man From Nowhere Movie Review (2010)
John Wick in Korean, but 4 years before John Wick ever came out? I am SO here for The Man From Nowhere and it is FANTASTIC!
I’ll admit that, as usual, I went into this movie completely blind. I had added it to my list long ago and clicked play without reading anything further. Honestly, I did not expect to love it as much as I did, but man, I loved this film.
The Man From Nowhere is a revenge thriller about a mysterious man with a mysterious past who notices that his neighbor’s adolescent daughter is being neglected. She seemingly has no friends, has to shoplift to take care of her needs, and has absolutely no one to turn to. When things go awry and she gets kidnapped, the mystery man realizes that he needs to save her and sets off to battle anyone who steps in his way. It is extremely violent, extremely bloody, extremely well choreographed, and absolute candy for the eyes.
In the first 20 minutes of the film, there are clear visual connections and inspirations between The Man From Nowhere and John Wick. But since John Wick came out in 2014 and this film is from 2010, we can be certain that John Wick’s writer and director took the inspiration from here.
Our mystery man is frequently hiding his face with hair or a hat, wearing a slick and stylie dark suit, fending off bad guys right and left, getting injured constantly, and dedicated to a single task that he intends to see through. Remind you of anybody?
I was shocked at how attached I got to the characters in this movie. I was invested and enjoying the film in all capacities, but when I heard myself start yelling, “No no no no no!” at the television screen, audibly laughing, and later, crying, I surprised myself.
I don’t know when I started to care for them, but I did. Somehow, they burrowed themselves into my heart amidst all the blood and death. It was an excellent little unexpected treat. Plus, there is one baddie that is different from everyone else I’ve seen in this type of film. More serious, more solitary, and it is an excellent choice.
The Man From Nowhere is a great movie that you have to see – and the song at the end is the perfect cap on the film. That said, it is very violent, so don’t say I didn’t warn you! Don’t watch this one with any little guys around!
