A fascinating film that centers around a group of aliens that has landed in our world and inhabits a small area of South Africa, District 9 has a mockumentary feel with an interesting story to tell. There is a common saying that basically says there are no new ideas. Mark Twain is credited with the…
A classic 90s crime caper, Sneakers has a fantastic cast and shows off all of the pique technology of the day that we can look back on now with smiling nostalgia. I remember watching this movie in the movie theater when I was in high school. I vaguely remember the story, and a few things…
A fantastical tale of love and grief, The Fountain, about a medical researcher trying to save his dying wife, includes many layers and epic stories. When this movie was first released, I remember hearing the mixed reviews. People thought it was confusing or were in love with it; the stories didn’t connect with each other…
A slow-burning drama about three students who learn that their lives aren’t what they expect them to be, Never Let Me Go will leave a lasting impression. There are some movies that I watch because I’ve seen the cast. I like to know next to nothing about a film before I view it – particularly…
The second film in the original Frankenstein series, Bride Of Frankenstein, which follows Frankenstein’s monster on his continuing journey, is still incredibly engaging and better than the original. The “Bride of Frankenstein” has always been a character in the ether. You see her show up as a Halloween costume or occasionally if someone gets electrocuted…
A fantasy thriller about a woman who has been sent to an island for rehabilitation to become her perfect self, Paradise Hills has an odd narrative and little depth. Awkwafina has had a fascinating career. She is one of those actors who shot to stardom seemingly very quickly, and has lots of incredible films under…
A charmless action flick in the dystopian future where minutes are currency, In Time gets better the more time you give it. When you watch a lot of movies, you easily develop some favorites in each genre. Among the action films, The Bourne series is up there for me. You are engaged right from the…
An tense thriller about a dystopian future where couples who want a child must complete a 7 day assessment, The Assessment feels like a slowly building nightmare. Horror movies come in many forms these days. I am not a fan of the ones with the creepy music and jump scares, but a lot of psychological…
A sci-fi drama about a human and an alien who end up stranded together on an unfamiliar planet, Enemy Mine is a futuristic film full of heart. I have watched Enemy Mine a number of times over the last 40 years. I was young when it was first released, but I remember my mother watching…
The classic film that brought the monster to the screen, Frankenstein from 1931, about an inventor who scavenges for human scraps to create a brand new being, still holds up well. I recently watched the new Frankenstein film (2025) and absolutely loved it. It was magnificent and I could probably talk about it for hours….
A very heavy drama, The Thing With Feathers, about a man mourning the death of his wife while caring for his children and being visited by a large crow, is a phenomenal representation of despair. When you have experienced a loss, there is a spectrum of emotions. If the person was an acquaintance or a…
A fast-paced action flick, The Running Man, about a man who enters a near-fatal television competition to earn money to take care of his family, has lots of chases, but little depth. I remember when The Running Man movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger came out in 1987. I watched it with my brother in the movie…
