A poetic and haunting coming-of-age film about a teen girl looking to escape her heavy reality, I Believe In Unicorns is simple, but affecting. One of the most unsettling times of life is likely when we transition from awkward adolescent to awkward teen. Your hormones are all over the place, your body is changing, and…
A breathtakingly emotional film about a young man, his eccentric wife, and the journey to create Hamlet, Hamnet will both enrapture you and bring you to tears. I have always been a bit of a sucker for Shakespearean history. I find it fascinating that there is speculation that he may not have written all of…
A hysterical comedy about three tweens who want to attend their first kissing party, Good Boys is raunchy and sidesplittingly funny, but mostly because of how sweet the kids are. When I first saw Superbad, I remember thinking that it was funny, but wasn’t quite my humor. The cast (Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Emma Stone,…
A smart romantic comedy about a woman who must choose between her two husbands in the afterlife, Eternity has an excellent concept, but becomes too serious in the third act. There is something about the film Defending Your Life that is comfortable. I think that it is the way that Albert Brooks presents a story,…
A tender and bittersweet film about a couple dealing with a huge loss and grief in two separate ways, The Starling is a quirky and enjoyable ride. It is no secret that I love the movie St. Vincent. I wrote about it a little while ago and I watch it every few years. Tonally, it…
A tedious romantic drama about various people in various relationships, Regretting You is long, drawn out, and the definition of its title. Between Once Upon A Time, Gifted, and Young Sheldon, I feel like I’ve watched McKenna Grace grow up on screen. Most of us have seen her in something – she has already had…
A classic story of love, Wuthering Heights, about two people in a toxic relationship who hurt themselves and other people, has more than held up in both acting and cinematography. When you’re in high school, there are some staples that you read in English class. For me, those included The Red Badge Of Courage, The…
An inane film about a shallow modern matchmaker who is looking for the perfect rich guy, Materialists is not one to waste your time with. Looking at the movie poster, I was already wary. Not knowing anything about the film other than it appears that Dakota Johnson is choosing between Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans,…
A sweet rom-com that grows on you, A Merry Little Ex-Mas, about a still-friendly married couple getting divorced during the holiday season, is the breezy little movie you need right now. I am not a big Christmas movie person. I have my favorites, of course (I love Elf and if you consider Love Actually a…
A gorgeous film full of texture, wonder, and depth, Frankenstein, the classic story with a few twists, is truly one that you can’t miss. Frankenstein is one of those characters that has always been in the ether. Being alive today means never having lived in a world without the creator and his monster (as the…
An intense thriller with a gradual build, Enemy, about a teacher who discovers that he has a doppelganger with an entirely different life, leaves a lot of room for interpretation. I am a huge fan of Denis Villeneuve as a director. Incendies and Arrival are two of my absolute favorite films, and, while I couldn’t…
A respectable biopic about two years in the singer’s life, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere offers excellent insights into his music creation, but doesn’t grip you with his story. I don’t know a lot about Bruce Springsteen. I have always enjoyed his music on the radio, but I don’t know anything about his life, loves,…
