Good Boys Movie Review (2019)

A hysterical comedy about three tweens who want to attend their first kissing party, Good Boys is raunchy and sidesplittingly funny, but mostly because of how sweet the kids are.

When I first saw Superbad, I remember thinking that it was funny, but wasn’t quite my humor. The cast (Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Emma Stone, Jonah Hill and more) would go on to do some fantastic work, but I’ve never thought about revisiting their teen film. Then I saw the trailer for Good Boys. There was a reference to it being by the same guys as Superbad, and I just never got around to seeing it. But it was recently recommended to me, so I watched it. Why did I wait so long??

Good Boys is about three best friends, Max, Thor, and Lucas – The Beanbag Boys – who do everything together. They have recently graduated from 5th grade to 6th grade, and it’s a whole new world of friends and girls. When cool kid Soren (who is like a tiny Godfather) invites Max to his house for a “kissing party,” and Max finds out that his dream girl Brixlee will be there, he will stop at nothing to attend. But first he has to try to figure out how to salvage his dad’s drone and deal with two college girls and their issues.

I do not remember the last time I laughed this much at a movie. I’m honestly not sure that I ever have – this may be the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. Like, I’m glad that I watched it while I was alone because I made unrecognizable gurgling noises while laughing. It could have been really embarrassing, so maybe forget that I’m telling you. But it’s totally worth it.

Good Boys is a combination of things that fit perfectly together. First, one of the kids has a sister named Annabelle that appears creepily in the doorway occasionally. She says something funny or argues with her brother, and then leaves. This is one of many random things, but it is its own layer of weirdly amusing.

Second, the boys are incredibly good kids. They are innocent, respectful, loving towards their parents, care intensely for each other, and always want to do the right thing. And because of all of this, the situations that they get themselves into and the conversations or one-off lines are an absolute riot.

Third, the film is pretty raunchy, but not how you’d expect. The parents of one of the kids have a bunch of adult toys and paraphernalia. The kids do not understand what these things are, so they use them as an assist for their problems in the best ways they know how. You, on the other hand, know exactly what these things are, and it makes for uncomfortable and hilarious moments.

Fourth, remember when you were in 6th grade and you thought you knew everything because you heard it from an 8th grader? There is a lot of that in Good Boys and it never gets old.

I highly recommend that you do not watch the trailer for this film because it does not do it any justice. Just watch the movie with your guard down. Good Boys is not great cinema, but it is truly one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait to watch it again. Alone in the house. So no one hears my gurgle laugh.
