Based on a true story, Memories Of Murder, about a serial killer that struck a small town and the detectives who investigate, is a fantastic and intense thriller. It was only about five years ago that I developed a deep love of foreign films. I wasn’t raised watching anything that wasn’t in English and I…
Focusing on the days before Che Guevara became a historic revolutionary, The Motorcycle Diaries is an earnest and touching exploration of what led him to fight against injustice. When I first thought about watching this movie, I was both curious and a little embarrassed. I know a few things about Che Guevara, but if I’m…
A film about an uncle tasked with taking care of his precocious nephew for a few weeks, C’mon C’mon is an authentic look into the mental freedom of adolescents vs. the fear and guardedness of adults. I have always found the differences in generations fascinating. Every generation thinks that they did things the “right way,”…
A short documentary about twins June and Jennifer Gibbons, The Silent Twin: Without My Shadow features the surviving twin, doctors, and original footage from a time where the girls were locked in a curious toxic battle of silence and conflict. I recently watched and reviewed the film The Silent Twins, a fictional accounting of June…
A striking and heartbreaking documentary about a woman who was shot on someone else’s doorstep, The Perfect Neighbor will have you yelling at the television. I know a lot of people who have minor issues with their neighbors. I live in a big city, and all of the houses and apartments are immediately next to…
A heartfelt documentary about the Indigo Girls, It’s Only Life After All covers the lives, relationship, activism, and soul-stirring music of two incredibly authentic women. I first learned about the Indigo Girls in 1994, during my first year in college. One of my new friends was a die-hard fan and I had never heard of…
A striking new musical about an Argentine revolutionary and a gay movie buff who tells stories to occupy their minds in jail, Kiss Of The Spider Woman highlights a creative narrative, a good score, and an outstanding performance – but it’s not who you might expect. When I first heard that they were going to…
An enchanting film about two teens that find that they are magically waking up in each other’s bodies, Your Name. is a touching journey with a few surprises along the way. Many people stay away from animated films, and that makes sense if you were raised in the era of Saturday morning cartoons. A long…
Realistic and captivating, All The President’s Men covers a literal hunt for the truth after five men are arrested for breaking into the Watergate complex during the Nixon era. I watched the movie Nixon recently, and I really enjoyed it, but when I was finished, I still had questions about the specifics of the Watergate…
A sweet and salty comedy about a teen with muscular dystrophy and the man who becomes his caretaker, The Fundamentals Of Caring is the movie you never knew you needed in your life. There are some movies that, when they are over, leave you with a smile. They aren’t great cinema and you can’t dissect…
A wild film about a group of revolutionaries and the military man who comes hunting for them 16 years later, One Battle After Another sports an excellent cast and some gorgeous cinematography. A film with a great cast is enough to entice anyone to see a movie. Filmmakers know it, actors know it, and audiences…
A unique and quirky film about a mother and daughter’s encounter with Death, Tuesday is a mythic story that keeps you on your toes. I am always interested in A24 movies. An entertainment company that often releases films that are a little off-center, that is my bread and butter. They can be hit or miss…
