A sci-fi drama about a human and an alien who end up stranded together on an unfamiliar planet, Enemy Mine is a futuristic film full of heart. I have watched Enemy Mine a number of times over the last 40 years. I was young when it was first released, but I remember my mother watching…
An enchanting tale about a young Irish girl learning her family history and searching for her missing little brother, The Secret Of Roan Inish is a beautiful and magical story involving selkies. I first watched this film when it came out in 1994. To be completely candid, I have always loved it, but don’t remember…
A poetic and haunting coming-of-age film about a teen girl looking to escape her heavy reality, I Believe In Unicorns is simple, but affecting. One of the most unsettling times of life is likely when we transition from awkward adolescent to awkward teen. Your hormones are all over the place, your body is changing, and…
A hysterical comedy about three tweens who want to attend their first kissing party, Good Boys is raunchy and sidesplittingly funny, but mostly because of how sweet the kids are. When I first saw Superbad, I remember thinking that it was funny, but wasn’t quite my humor. The cast (Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Emma Stone,…
A very heavy drama, The Thing With Feathers, about a man mourning the death of his wife while caring for his children and being visited by a large crow, is a phenomenal representation of despair. When you have experienced a loss, there is a spectrum of emotions. If the person was an acquaintance or a…
A captivatingly authentic documentary about four people’s journeys after coming out of traumatic brain injury comas, Coma is both informative and heart-wrenching. When you think of medical dramas on television, there tends to be a balance between real medical possibilities and stretching the truth. I have a pet peeve about when patients wake up from…
A fascinating documentary where dozens of senior officials disclose information about unidentified flying objects, beings, and cover-ups, The Age Of Disclosure sheds a lot of light. I have watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind many times. And each and every time, I think, I wonder if that has happened? I wonder if it could…
A weighty film about a woman dealing with a sick daughter, a difficult marriage, and hole in her roof, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is a brilliant look into the jostling gears of a struggling mind. When people trade memes about the stressors of being an adult, most of us chuckle. As a…
An excellent tribute to the life and legacy of the famous singer who left too soon, Selena y Los Dinos provides countless family photos, videos, and interviews to let people know the real woman behind the voice. Having grown up in Chicago in the 80s and 90s and having never been exposed to specific Latin…
An intense film about two conspiracy theorists who kidnap a woman because they believe she is an alien, Bugonia keeps you on the edge of your seat right until the end. It is always intriguing when you see actors and directors continue to work together. It makes you wonder what is happening behind the scenes…
A deep-dive into the 1960s crimes and suspects, The Boston Strangler: Unheard Confession includes fascinating new data points as well as determinative DNA results. With all of the developments in criminology and DNA testing, I always hope that the age of serial killers has ended. How anyone could get away with ongoing crimes feels like…
A stylized film that ranges from comedy to grotesque, The Substance, about an aging star who wants her youth and adoration back, is a lot of fun and may have you covering your eyes. I have talked many times about my aversion to scary movies, but every once in a while, there’s a crossover that…
