We Live In Time Movie Review (2024)
A gorgeously emotional film with palpable depth, We Live In Time follows one couple’s journey together through all of life’s ups and downs.
There are very few movies that balance the weight of their entirely on the two main leads. Lots of films tell love stories, but usually there are meddling parents or an ex-partner getting in the way. You could argue that a film like The Notebook gets really close, and I agree, but not quite like this.
We Live In Time is about Almut and Tobias, a couple who meets, falls in love, and lives a life together. There are complications, situations, and consequences that they may not have chosen, but they stick with their love for each other because, despite everything, they want to be there.
I’m going to do my best to convey this movie with words, but I’m going to tell you right now, I’m not sure that I can do the emotional richness the justice it deserves. This is a spectacular film. On the day that I began watching it, I wasn’t feeling well, but I didn’t know that when I hit play. When I paused it, knowing that I’d be back as soon as I could do my film-watching justice, I could not stop thinking about it. And I wasn’t thinking about a specific scene or dialogue, it was the essence of the movie that somehow got lodged into my soul. I couldn’t explain it.
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are everything in this movie. There are a few other characters introduced, but these two are the heart and spirit. Their chemistry is magnificent and every single vignette feeds the passion and warmth that you feel while watching.
Tobias is a quiet and intense man whose depth of love for Almut is unmatched. You see it smoldering out through his eyes, whether it is for a positive or negative passionate reason. He would do anything for this woman, even if it means sacrificing the vision he’s had for his future.
Almut, a chef, is more relaxed, yet heavily focused on her life choices and not needing to live by any modern norm. It doesn’t matter – you do what you do and focus your achievements on what you want them to be. And here’s this beautiful man who seems to deeply understand.
The entire story is told in a nonlinear fashion, jumping around in time so that you never quite know where you are. The effect is magical and exciting, as the story slowly unfolds with twists and turns that you don’t expect.
Along with some wonderful cinematography (with bold color choices in lighting and camera framing) and a small but captivating role by Lee Braithwaite as Almut’s sous chef, We Live In Time is a fantastic movie. You will feel all the feels, have mad respect for the two leads, and develop an understanding for these two good, but imperfect people. I loved it and I think my heart got a tiny bit bigger.
