The Rip Movie Review and Poster 2026

The Rip Movie Review (2026)

A mystery thriller about a police unit that discovers a house with hidden millions in cash, The Rip is fairly standard cop drama, but gets a lift in the third act.

The Rip Movie Review and Poster 2026For many of us, seeing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on screen together is a lot of fun. Since Good Will Hunting, they’ve done various projects, each taking different acting or production roles in that project, but their friendship literally jumps through the screen. One of my favorite displays of that was during The Last Duel, when Affleck played a nobleman who is taking the pledge of underling, Damon. Damon kneels and Affleck yells “Closer!” in a moment that you know was unscripted and a cute improv between the two friends.

The Rip is about a team of Miami police officers whose job it is to hunt down cash that has been acquired through narcotics sales. When their captain is murdered, every member of the team comes under suspicion. New leader, Dane, is given a promotion, and receives a tip about a stash of money hidden in a house in Hialeah. When the team arrives at the house, they find the granddaughter of the deceased owner and $20 million dollars in hidden cash. Something doesn’t smell right, so everyone is trying to figure out if there’s a mole.

Right from the beginning, you are told that this film is inspired by true events. For me, that always adds a layer of curiosity because it’s fun to see real-life happenings on screen that someone found interesting enough to dramatize.

This is an incredibly standard-feeling cop drama, though, that is also a mystery and, later, thriller. The first act is the setup, so it takes some time to learn who everyone is, what they are doing, and what the movie is going to be about. No problem. During the second act, I started wondering if we were going anywhere. It was moving along, but I didn’t feel connected to anything or anybody. It was a very detached experience. But the third act is where everything (finally) goes somewhere and does something.

In addition to Affleck and Damon, you have some friendly faces in the film. Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler fill out the cast. They’re all enjoyable, but the lack of story depth doesn’t do anyone any extra favors.

The one thing that continually cracked me up was how much swearing there is in this film. I have no problem with swearing, and I appreciate it in most movies because it emphasizes the statement or scene, but this was different. I kept thinking, if you turned it into a drinking game where you drank every time someone swore, you’d be dead halfway into the film. It didn’t add or detract from the film for me, it was just really funny.

The Rip is a totally fine film that gets better and comes together in the last act. In my opinion, it takes a little too long to get there, and you don’t have any emotional connection to any character, but it’s enjoyable enough. I likely won’t watch it again, but it’s not going to hurt you. And if cop dramas are your thing, you’re going to like it.
