Imagine Me & You Movie Review (2006)

A cute romantic comedy, Imagine Me & You is light and fun with likeable characters and a standard formula.

Imagine Me & You Movie Review and Poster 2017So many romantic comedies follow the same formula. Girl meets boy, they fall for each other, there is an obstacle in their way, one of them says they can’t be together, and then they end up together. Roll the credits. I’m not knocking it, it’s a formula that usually works – especially if you keep tweaking it.

Imagine Me & You is a movie that starts at the wedding of Rachel and Heck, a couple that has been dating for years and is already part of each other’s families. While walking down the aisle, Rachel and Luce (the wedding florist) meet eyes and there is an immediate spark. Now married, Rachel is confused about whether her place is with Heck, her husband and best friend, or this new woman, who she finds herself drawn to.

My favorite thing about this romantic comedy is that everyone is the good guy. Nobody is perfect, but there is no man twisting his mustache and plotting for the downfall of anyone. All of the characters, from the parents to the curious little sister to the well-meaning adults, are people that you like. You root for them and you want all of them to come out of this pickle unscathed, if that were only possible.

In a time of video rental stores and newspapers, Luce runs a flower shop that people walk into regularly. There are cell phones, but not smartphones, so most of the interactions are actually face to face. It’s almost funny to think that this was less than 20 years ago.

Piper Perabo, Lena Headly, and Matthew Goode play the trio at the center of this story. I loved the character of Heck (we all need a Heck in our lives), but Lena Headly’s Luce is a bit of a standout. The little sister (played by Boo Jackson), who wants to know whether penguins have knees and solve the questions of the universe, is also fantastic. Every scene with her is a sweet one.

Between “Happy Together” by The Turtles playing at the end of the film (just try to get that delicious earworm out of your head) and the mom asking if the women are lesbi-friends, this is a cute little romcom worth watching. Because in the end, everyone wins.
