Heads Of State Movie Review (2025)
A popcorn action flick, Heads of State is full of silliness and color. With a few laugh out loud moments, it’s a good one to watch if you need something light.
When the world is in the midst of serious craziness, it can be good to have films to escape to. I’m not sure that something political would have been my first choice, but strangely, it worked out.
Heads Of State is about the United States President and the Prime Minister of Britain, two men who can’t stand each other. In trying to create a photo opportunity, they take Air Force One to their respective destinations, but on the way, they get attacked and the plane explodes. Trying to figure out what is happening and stay alive, they go through a bunch of mishaps to get back home.
To be very clear, I could not tell you the specific details of this popcorn action comedy if you paid me. I didn’t understand (in detail) who all of the bad guys were or what they wanted. I picked up some of it, but the truth is, it doesn’t matter. This isn’t the kind of movie where anything changes if you understand everything.
I didn’t expect to enjoy a John Cena presidency, but it definitely grew on me. Idris Elba is always delicious to watch and this movie is no exception. There’s a cute Jack Quaid cameo in the movie that bumps up the energy as well. The purpose of Priyanka Chopra’s character was a little iffy, but it was nice enough to have a badass woman in the mix.
There is nothing deep to the vast majority of this movie, but there was a small scene that broke through. Both men are talking to the people around them and they say, “We need partnerships. We need to treat each other with respect. Embrace each other’s differences and lean into our commonalities. To send a message to future generations that we were here. That we did the right thing. And that starts by taking the fight to the real enemies we face.” It’s a message for the times and I appreciated hearing it.
The soundtrack is fun with a bunch of earworms, including Total Eclipse of the Heart and Kickstart My Heart and my favorite quote was, “It’s a real nut punch in a Ziploc bag out there.” You get a real feel for this movie between the two.
Overall, this is a light film with a silly premise, lots of color, and tons of action. The characters are enjoyable and ridiculous, and it definitely gets better the longer you watch. The first half hour was fairly boring to me, but hang in there. It lights up.
