Hanna Movie Review (2011)

A platinum blonde teenager with bright blue eyes who can seemingly kick the butt of many men in seconds while being raised by her off-the-grid father? Hanna is solid.

Hanna 2011 movie poster for reviewA great action movie engages you from the beginning. Whether it’s through curiosity, action sequences, or something else flashy, I’m always looking to be hooked. And this one did that for me.

Hanna is a movie about a German teenager named Hanna who, while living in the wilderness with her scruffy father, is being trained to fend for herself and defend herself at all costs. When she separates from her dad and suddenly becomes the target of a government operative, she must do what she can to survive, while using all of her skills, in order to meet up with her father again in a designated safe place.

This is a combination thriller/action/mystery film and it’s a lot of fun. You and Hanna know equal amounts about who she is and her limited history, so you learn as she does. Why is this agent out to get her? Her father told her that this day would come, but who is she, what is special about her, and what does it mean?

I was curious how this film would be, as Joe Wright (of Atonement, Anna Karenina, and Pride & Prejudice) is the director. I wanted to see how he would create an action film that had nothing to do with corsets or aristocrats, and I was very pleasantly surprised.

With Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, and Cate Blanchett – three excellent actors who are magnetic in their own ways on screen – you’ve got a concrete base for a good film. Along with some interesting side characters, a few surprises about Hanna, and some great laugh-out-loud moments, this was an entertaining ride that I was happy to be on. I hope you enjoy it too.

My only complaint about the film is Cate Blanchett’s thick southern accent. I’m not sure it complimented the character or the story in any way, and it was semi-distracting. That said, everything else flowed so smoothly and enjoyably that I was able to put it to the side.
