Die My Love Movie Review (2025)
A challenging film about a woman dealing with post-partum depression while sinking into madness, Die My Love has phenomenal cinematography and performances, but is an extremely unlikeable watch.
There are a lot of movies out there that are selective viewing. Films that you only ever want to watch once because they are devastating (like The Hunt), overwhelming (like The Revenant), or horrifically accurate (like Schindler’s List), butut you remember them fondly as movies that impacted you. They are films that everyone should see. With this one, though, I’m not so sure.
Die My Love is about Grace, a writer and mother to a 6-month-old child with her boyfriend, Jackson. Now living in the rural home of Jackson’s deceased uncle, Jackson spends his days working on the road, while Grace is at home with the baby and massive amounts of boredom. As time goes by, Grace begins to exhibit erratic behavior, noticed by everyone around her, and Jackson doesn’t know how to handle it.
Let me be frank – I hated the first hour of this movie. I was bored, the characters gave me the ick, I had lingering concerns for the baby, and I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I could not find a way to be invested because the entire point is boredom. There is no story to dig your teeth into.
The second hour is mildly more interesting, as the beginnings of a storyline form. Grace is a creature of her id, so all she thinks about is sex and her own needs, while sometimes managing the baby. But her boredom and misery are eating her alive, so she lashes out by doing inappropriate or irrational things.
That said, there are a few positives. The cinematography is beautiful, and I particularly loved the scenes where they were shot in darkness, but you could barely see the characters through a foggy haze of light that covers the world.
Jennifer Lawrence is completely dialed in as Grace and Robert Pattinson does a nice job as her inattentive and unsure partner, Jackson.
Also, because Grace is a writer (although she doesn’t write anymore) and lives in her head so often, the scenes fade in and out of fantasy and reality such that you believe it is all reality until it doesn’t quite make sense.
Overall, though, this is an incredibly unlikeable film because of exactly what it is. If you enjoy movies with a free-flowing vibe and no specific story (like The Tree Of Life), you may really enjoy Die My Love. Otherwise, take a pass.
