A crime thriller about a few detectives hunting down a suspect who suddenly kills en masse, To Catch A Killer starts out strong, but loses its way. I am always a fan of a good thriller. I watch a lot of true crime and, just like so many of us, I can’t help but try…
An esoteric thriller about a traumatized veteran who works to rescue trafficked girls, You Were Never Really Here’s impressionistic style becomes increasingly difficult to connect with. Joaquin Phoenix is one of those actors known for taking an array of different roles. Starring in everything from Napoleon to Beau Is Afraid, he is brave in his…
A comedy with spunk, Deep Cover, about three improv actors who suddenly find themselves working to take down criminals, is fast-paced fun. One of my favorite things about movies is that you get to know certain faces. I am someone who doesn’t like to know too much about actors’ lives, but I love to start…
A quiet film about one man’s life working on the railroad and creating a family, Train Dreams is soft and poetic with a phenomenal performance by Joel Edgerton. I have been keeping a close eye on Joel Edgerton since he starred in Kinky Boots in 2005. He is a fascinating actor who is able to…
A mystery thriller about a police unit that discovers a house with hidden millions in cash, The Rip is fairly standard cop drama, but gets a lift in the third act. For many of us, seeing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on screen together is a lot of fun. Since Good Will Hunting, they’ve done…
Peculiar and haunting, Beau Is Afraid, about a paranoid man trying to get home to his mother, has some magical visuals and taps into your own discomfort. I think it’s fair to say that Ari Aster has a directorial style. This is the second of his films that I have seen (the other one being…
A stylistic film about a feisty young man looking to fulfill his dream of being the top table tennis player on the circuit, Marty Supreme is the carnival ride that never stops. I have mentioned before that Timothée Chalamet is not my favorite actor. There is something about his performances that I don’t connect with…
A classic 50s film about a man hired to keep an eye on a woman having a mental health crisis, Vertigo is an excellent example of Hitchcock’s ability to build suspense. Alfred Hitchcock is a director who- left a clear mark in cinema. Among other things, he was able to create a slow building tension…
A dystopian thriller about a paraplegic man who receives an implant that gives his body hyperabilities, Upgrade is a middle-of-the-road film until the ending gives it a boost. One of the best things about futuristic sci-fi films is that they can do anything they want. They can build any world that they want, create any…
A slow-building thriller about a father who goes on the run with his 9 year old daughter, She Rides Shotgun is a great journey that highlights a beautiful performance by Ana Sophia Heger. I wasn’t familiar with Ana Sophia Heger before this movie. With only six credits to her name (one being toddler Lark in…
A fascinating film that centers around a group of aliens that has landed in our world and inhabits a small area of South Africa, District 9 has a mockumentary feel with an interesting story to tell. There is a common saying that basically says there are no new ideas. Mark Twain is credited with the…
An intense thriller about a news cameraman with a questionable moral compass, Nightcrawler slowly raises the stakes with mushrooming pressure and a fantastic lead. There are so many great films that fly under the radar. Maybe they don’t get a full release at the movie theaters or there is a blockbuster released at the same…
