A heartfelt dramedy about a widow working at an aquarium who forms an unusual connection with an observant octopus, Remarkably Bright Creatures is a warm film with a strong cast, beautiful marine life, and gentle, storybook-like charm. I read this book shortly after it was released in 2022, and I loved it. It takes you…
A fantasy adventure about a young girl afraid of the real monsters under her bed, Dust Bunny is a beautifully designed film, with charming performances and an imaginative, storybook-like feel. Mads Mikkelsen has slowly added himself to my list of favorite actors. I first noticed him years ago, but it was when I watched Arctic…
A light, true-crime drama about a romance and murder in an Amish community, Amish Stud is a simple film with a silly tone that somehow manages to maintain some minor intrigue. The Lifetime channel is famous for producing true-crime dramatic reinterpretations. They are often low-budget and campy, but they are incredibly easy to watch. There…
A suspenseful thriller about a deaf woman targeted by a serial killer, Midnight is a well-executed and immersive film that brings a fresh perspective to a familiar premise. There are so many phenomenal Korean films. A Taxi Driver, Minari, Memories of Murder, The Man From Nowhere, so many great ones. But because they aren’t marketed…
A moody drama about four criminals laying low in a house together, All the Devils Are Here is stylistically interesting but ultimately dull, never quite making the most of its talented cast. Sam Claflin is one of those actors who can factor into my choosing to watch a movie. He is consistently likable, even when…
A subdued drama about a woman accused of her husband’s death, Anatomy Of A Fall is a pensive film where every word feels intentional, anchored by strong performances and spectacular cinematography. When I watched Project Hail Mary, I was struck by many things – it’s a fantastic film. One of them was Sandra Hüller, the…
An intense historical thriller, Judas And The Black Messiah, about a man infiltrating the Black Panther Party during a time of turmoil, is a gripping film that never lets up. There are certain movies out there that, as great as the picture is, you remember mostly because of a powerhouse performance. When you think of…
A sci-fi mystery about a man investigating a death using experimental memory technology, Rememory is an intriguing story with strong performances, though the narrative feels a bit loose. When it comes to science fiction films that fly under the radar, they can be very hit or miss. Sometimes you get something exciting and original, like…
A slow-burning psychological thriller about two brothers raised by a father who believes he’s doing God’s work, Frailty is a morally ambiguous film that cleverly reels you in and never lets go. I love a good psychological thriller, especially when I know nothing about it. I watched Like Minds, The Assessment, and Blink Twice fully…
A true-crime dramatization of the infamous murder case, Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story leans so heavily into melodrama that it becomes difficult to take seriously. I don’t watch many Lifetime movies, but I am a huge true crime lover. If you are willing to share your story, I’m here to watch it, and lots…
A well-paced espionage drama with surreal touches, The Secret Agent is intriguing and creatively constructed, even if it never fully settles into place. With the Academy Awards for 2025 films airing a few days ago, I had a chance to watch a lot of the nominated films, but not all of them. This movie has…
A darkly funny thriller about a chance encounter that spirals into something more complicated, It Was Just An Accident balances mystery, tension, and surprising emotional weight. When I was at university, our theatre department put on a production of Death And The Maiden. I was on the stage crew at that point, working towards being…
