A unique sci-fi thriller with some twists that I never saw coming, Companion, about a weekend away with friends that goes awry, kept me constantly wondering what would happen next. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t do scary movies. I don’t enjoy them and, innately, I stay away from them because the music and images…
Based on a Tony winning play, The History Boys, about a group of teenage boys trying to achieve entrance into university, is different than it seems to be. Being the theatre nerd that I am, I had heard about The History Boys and added it to my watchlist years ago. The film is based on…
A short documentary about twins June and Jennifer Gibbons, The Silent Twin: Without My Shadow features the surviving twin, doctors, and original footage from a time where the girls were locked in a curious toxic battle of silence and conflict. I recently watched and reviewed the film The Silent Twins, a fictional accounting of June…
A striking and heartbreaking documentary about a woman who was shot on someone else’s doorstep, The Perfect Neighbor will have you yelling at the television. I know a lot of people who have minor issues with their neighbors. I live in a big city, and all of the houses and apartments are immediately next to…
A formulaic romantic comedy about a woman whose mother insists that she follow a list of past dreams to jump-start her life, The Life List is a good concept with mediocre execution. I was first introduced to Sofia Carson as Evie, the daughter of Snow White’s evil queen in the Descendants franchise. My daughter was…
A heartfelt documentary about the Indigo Girls, It’s Only Life After All covers the lives, relationship, activism, and soul-stirring music of two incredibly authentic women. I first learned about the Indigo Girls in 1994, during my first year in college. One of my new friends was a die-hard fan and I had never heard of…
A strange and silly romp about a Friday night family dinner that gets chaotic really quickly, Bad Shabbos is light and welcoming, but feels like it has been directed by three different people. I love to watch movies that I know nothing about. There is a sense of fun and mystery about pressing play and…
An entertaining film based on a true story, Roofman, about a convicted robber who breaks out of jail and lives undetected in a Toys R Us, is leveled up due to the charm of Channing Tatum. A good film that is based in reality is always a lot of fun. For me, I find myself…
A hysterical sequel, 22 Jump Street brings back the clueless adult cops, but this time sends them to college where frat parties, football games, and open mic nights are the way of life. I’ll admit, I didn’t think that I’d be watching two 21 Jump Street films in the same week. I had never really…
A comedy thriller about a man who doesn’t experience pain trying to save the girl he loves from kidnappers, Novocaine is an uneven film with some hilarious moments. There are some movies and television episodes that stick with you long after you’ve watched them. In one early episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Abigail Breslin played a…
A striking new musical about an Argentine revolutionary and a gay movie buff who tells stories to occupy their minds in jail, Kiss Of The Spider Woman highlights a creative narrative, a good score, and an outstanding performance – but it’s not who you might expect. When I first heard that they were going to…
An enchanting film about two teens that find that they are magically waking up in each other’s bodies, Your Name. is a touching journey with a few surprises along the way. Many people stay away from animated films, and that makes sense if you were raised in the era of Saturday morning cartoons. A long…
