A zany film about a stylish young woman with big party dreams and no life goals, Party Girl is a fun time covered in candy coating with Parker Posey at the helm. I might be biased, but I think that Parker Posey is super cool. She is unlike any other actor, with her little quirks…
A cute film about two teenagers stuck reliving the same day on repeat, The Map Of Tiny Perfect Things does a good job of highlighting the greatness of moments that usually go unnoticed. There have been a number of films released in the last two decades where individuals are stuck in a time loop. There…
A quiet film about one man’s life working on the railroad and creating a family, Train Dreams is soft and poetic with a phenomenal performance by Joel Edgerton. I have been keeping a close eye on Joel Edgerton since he starred in Kinky Boots in 2005. He is a fascinating actor who is able to…
A mystery thriller about a police unit that discovers a house with hidden millions in cash, The Rip is fairly standard cop drama, but gets a lift in the third act. For many of us, seeing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on screen together is a lot of fun. Since Good Will Hunting, they’ve done…
A very funny indie about estranged brothers who are forced to take a trip together to help their sister, Brothers From Malta has its own quirky style and vibe. Some of my very favorite movies are independent films. 500 Days Of Summer, Reservoir Dogs, Juno – they all started small and weren’t concerned with the…
Based on a true story about a singing duo who perform a Neil Diamond experience and have a family, Song Sung Blue is an entertaining musical film that runs a little long. I was raised on Neil Diamond music. As a young child of the late 70s and early 80s, I remember my father playing…
Peculiar and haunting, Beau Is Afraid, about a paranoid man trying to get home to his mother, has some magical visuals and taps into your own discomfort. I think it’s fair to say that Ari Aster has a directorial style. This is the second of his films that I have seen (the other one being…
A light romantic comedy about a woman who learns that she will meet her love before her sister’s wedding, Five Blind Dates is incredibly cliché with a few hidden depths. Not all romantic comedies are the same. There are the great ones (like Crazy Stupid Love and About Time) and others that are cute, but…
A stylistic film about a feisty young man looking to fulfill his dream of being the top table tennis player on the circuit, Marty Supreme is the carnival ride that never stops. I have mentioned before that Timothée Chalamet is not my favorite actor. There is something about his performances that I don’t connect with…
A classic 50s film about a man hired to keep an eye on a woman having a mental health crisis, Vertigo is an excellent example of Hitchcock’s ability to build suspense. Alfred Hitchcock is a director who- left a clear mark in cinema. Among other things, he was able to create a slow building tension…
A cute rom-com about two friends who go on vacation together every year, People We Meet On Vacation is light and predictable, but entertaining. While I always love going to the movie theater, there is something to be said for watching movies at home. It’s cozy, your snacks are right in the kitchen, and the…
A dystopian thriller about a paraplegic man who receives an implant that gives his body hyperabilities, Upgrade is a middle-of-the-road film until the ending gives it a boost. One of the best things about futuristic sci-fi films is that they can do anything they want. They can build any world that they want, create any…
