A fantasy adventure about an imprisoned princess battling her way through an army of enemies to save her family and kingdom, The Princess delivers plenty of energetic action and impressive choreography, though the story takes much longer to find its footing. I woke up today and started thinking about the movie Damsel. I’m not sure…
A superhero adventure about Supergirl helping a young alien hunt down the man responsible for her family’s murder, Supergirl is a perfectly enjoyable watch, offering creative science-fiction ideas and some exciting action, even if its cookie-cutter story and thin character development keep it from becoming something memorable. When the Superman movie started being discussed in…
A historical drama imagining Robin Hood’s final days, inspired by historical accounts, The Death Of Robin Hood is visually striking and heavily violent, but never becomes more than interesting. I have always had a soft spot for the Robin Hood story. Much like Camelot, the mythology is fascinating, and I’ve always wished that there was…
A coming-of-age drama about a group of teenagers navigating class conflict and identity, The Outsiders is a gritty, engaging film with a strong young cast of future stars and a story that grows more compelling as it unfolds. When The Outsiders opened on Broadway in 2024, I didn’t know the story. I had never read…
A quirky romantic comedy about a movie-store owner who meets a morally ambiguous woman, Watching the Detectives is an unusual film with strong chemistry between the leads and fun references for cinephiles. The thing about Cillian Murphy is that I would happily watch him in anything. I know I’m not alone. There is a reason…
An animated family film about the toys adjusting to a changing world as Bonnie’s attention shifts toward new technology, Toy Story 5 is a sweet and engaging adventure that blends funny moments, heartfelt relationships, and a message that feels especially relevant today. When I heard there was a new Toy Story movie coming out, I…
A spellbinding drama following a successful young author across multiple stages of his life as the circumstances surrounding his disappearance slowly unfold, The Vanishing of Sidney Hall is a compelling film with an intriguing mystery and a nonlinear structure that keeps the story consistently interesting. I am a movie watcher who has a habit of…
A surreal comedy about two college students trying to retrieve a pizza while navigating increasingly absurd drug hallucinations, Pizza Movie is hilarious at first, though its escalating weirdness becomes more exhausting than entertaining. The first time I saw the trailer for this movie, I had a little laugh with my family. The two stars, Gaten…
A coming-of-age story about an aspiring young playwright gathering inspiration from the people around him while trying to stage his latest work, Griffin in Summer is a sweet and engaging film, with a simple story, likable characters, and thoughtful lessons about growing up. I have always been a theatre kid. When I was around 7…
A true-crime drama about the real-life disappearance of a woman and her infant daughter, Stolen Baby: The Murder of Heidi Broussard is steadily paced, with a strong central performance, and a more grounded tone than expected. Being the true-crime girlie that I am, I often find myself drawn to Lifetime movies. They are rarely good…
A psychological thriller about a troubled woman who becomes caught up in a missing-person case after witnessing something from her daily train ride, The Girl on the Train is a well-acted film with a solid mystery, even when the story becomes somewhat tangled. I read the book The Girl On The Train when it was…
A romantic dramedy about two people who develop an unexpected connection through a series of messages, Voicemails For Isabelle is a charming film, with an easy chemistry between the leads and an emotional payoff that proves surprisingly moving. I think we all know that Netflix romance movies are pretty hit-or-miss. Mostly miss. My Oxford Year…
