A quiet film full of yearning, Monica is the story of a trans woman who returns to her childhood home to help care for her memory-faded terminally ill mother. I added Monica to my watchlist after seeing stars Trace Lysette and Patricia Clarkson on a morning talk show one day. I had never heard of…
An exuberant documentary about the illegal 1974 Twin Towers high-wire crossing by Philippe Petit and his team of friends, Man On Wire is full of excellent interviews, photos, and videos taken at the time. This is lots of fun. I have had Man On Wire on my list to watch for a very long time….
A beautiful film set in a jail cell where a political prisoner listens to tales told by his flamboyant roommate, Kiss Of The Spider Woman is a big story in a small world. I remember watching Kiss Of The Spider Woman on tape as a teenager at my mom’s house. The new musical (of the…
An endearing romantic comedy about three sisters and their Master Chef father, Eat Drink Man Woman has a whole lot of heart and even more amazing food. I have heard mumblings about this film forever. I have been looking for it for years, but it doesn’t seem to be available to stream in the United…
A subtle coming-of-age story about an off-beat girl and her mother, Janet Planet captures those developmental moments when we first see our parents as real people. I am a child of the 80s and very early 90s. I remember the world very clearly when there were no computers or cell phones. When time floated along…
Full of fantastic music and tons of heart, Tick, Tick… Boom! is a film based on a musical about a composer who is desperately trying to finish his show while navigating his upcoming 30th birthday. I remember when Jonathan Larson passed away. For all of us theatre nerds out there, it is a story that…
A sweet movie about a housebound teen girl with a serious disease who develops a relationship with the boy who moves in next door, Everything, Everything is perfect for YA fiction fans. I read the book Everything, Everything a few years after it was released in 2015. I had heard that a movie had been…
A lifeless third installment of the series, Magic Mike’s Last Dance has a few entertaining dance numbers, but minimal anything else. I remember when the first Magic Mike movie was released, and it was all the rage. Women flocked to the theaters and it was all anyone was talking about for a short time. I…
A beautiful and complicated fairytale of a film, The Fisher King is about two struggling NYC strangers who have been broken by the same event, as one asks the other for help finding the holy grail. There are some movies that just stick with you. They are so beautiful or so funny or so touching…
A visually stunning film about a convict preacher who is hunting for a stash of money left to a robber’s young son, The Night Of The Hunter uses cinematic techniques that make it feel unique for its time. There aren’t a lot of films that I don’t feel fully equipped to rate. I have lots…
A gritty and wild thriller with a hint of comedy, Love Lies Bleeding is about a female bodybuilder and the woman who loves her, who affect each other’s worlds in unforeseeable ways. There are some movies that you have to marinate on after you’ve watched them. While the movie was on, there was so much…
An unusual drama about the process of selecting souls for life before birth, Nine Days will have you thinking twice about everything you thought you believed. I love a small film with depth. If you’re thinking outside of the box, that is my kind of movie. I want to wonder and ponder on it long…
