A surprisingly engaging sequel that takes on current issues in the high-pressure world of fashion journalism, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a stylish follow-up with sharp performances and catty exchanges that captures the same appeal as the original. There tends to be a cardinal rule when it comes to movies – if a sequel…
A suspenseful thriller about a deaf woman targeted by a serial killer, Midnight is a well-executed and immersive film that brings a fresh perspective to a familiar premise. There are so many phenomenal Korean films. A Taxi Driver, Minari, Memories of Murder, The Man From Nowhere, so many great ones. But because they aren’t marketed…
A charming coming-of-age dramedy about a teenager raised by parents with intellectual disabilities, Wildflower balances dry humor with a deeply heartfelt story about love and family. I always enjoy it when a movie lets you know that it’s inspired by a true story. Films about dinosaurs or predator sharks are lots of fun, but when…
An electrifying World War II drama focused on Winston Churchill’s first weeks as Prime Minister, Darkest Hour is elevated by exceptional performances and grand, atmospheric cinematography. There have been dozens of films made about World War II from many different perspectives. Whether it’s The Pianist, Hacksaw Ridge, or The Imitation Game, there are so many…
A harrowing dramatized thriller about the real 2008 terror attack in India, Hotel Mumbai is an intensely gripping survival story that highlights the courage of the hotel’s staff. In 2008, a series of twelve coordinated attacks befell Mumbai, India. Executed by a jihadist militant organization, men were sent to different locations to carry out their…
A tender science-fiction drama about a household robot who begins to develop human emotions, Bicentennial Man is far sweeter and more profound than I expected. Robin Williams had an incredible career in comedy, but his more serious roles are my favorites. As husband Chris Nielsen in What Dreams May Come, he tugged at our hearts,…
A fun and campy film about a girls’ boarding school on the verge of closing, St. Trinian’s is a high-spirited watch with lots of familiar faces. I have to admit, I love a good YA film. Teens being teens or adolescents finding their way, it’s a different, more nostalgic level of maturity that is often…
A fictionalized retelling of a famous historical life, Henry VIII and His Six Wives does an excellent job of covering each of Henry’s relationships while giving you a little bit of insight into each wife. Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. If you are at all familiar with the Broadway show SIX, the television show…
A sweet coming-of-age film about a boy and a girl who live next to each other and manage the ins and outs of puppy love as kids, Flipped is both nostalgic and relatable. Rob Reiner has directed some of the best films we have. The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Misery, and a personal nostalgic…
Contemplative and understated, The Children Act, about a judge who decides medically dubious cases for minors, slowly blossoms into something unexpected. Movies based on books can be hit or miss. You have so much source material and richness in print that, when you try to translate it into another medium, it can be challenging to…
A heartwarming film about an autistic teen musician who befriends a former pop star, I Used To Be Famous is fairly predictable, but it will put a smile on your face. There are some films out there that stick with you because they are different types of feel-good buddy comedies. I love both About A…
A touching story of an Army Ranger who is tasked with driving a military dog to her owner’s funeral, Dog is a unique buddy comedy with heart. When this first came out in movie theaters, my dad took my son to see it. My son was a teenager, and they had a great time. When…
